National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition Calls for Global Peace, Civility, and Human Rights to End Hate and Unify As One Humanity

Pulse Orlando Massacare

DALLAS, TEXAS - Fifty people were killed, including the gunman, and 53 others injured in a shooting at Pulse, a gay club in Orlando early Sunday morning June 12, 2016

We, the members and leadership of Black Trans Advocacy, send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed at Pulse nightclub during the beginning hours of Sunday morning. We pray for those who have died and they are at great peace and resting in power.

Black Trans Advocacy is dedicated to the human rights of Trans people of African descent globally. We are very aware in this climate of antagonism, prejudice and hatred against LGBTQ people, that incidents like the one in Orlando, although tragic, are not entirely surprising.

Daily, LGBTQ people are subject to all manner of harassment and violence, rooted in fear, ignorance and hate. We stand today with our Muslim brothers a sisters calling for peace and an end to rhetoric that demonizes people based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and ethnicity. We are very clear that this evil act was born out of hate. But we stand together in mutual compassion and peace.

This hate crime has captured the world's attention. However there are acts of hate committed against LGBTQ persons that don't receive this level of attention, from children being thrown out of their homes for being queer or trans, to the use of religion to condemn queer and Trans people to hell, to the bashings and murders of queer and Trans people, we unequivocally call for peace, civility, and human rights for our people.

The President has set a tone of affirmation and equity for our communities and we advise Americans across the nation to follow his lead. We urge conversations among people regarding sexual orientation and gender identity to foster mutual understanding and to cultivate compassion so that these heinous act of hate will no longer happen. Please use this opportunity to turn the poison of hate in to the medicinal balm of love.
