Advocating for Trans Youth In Texas
February 27, 2022 – Dallas, TEXAS – The National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, the only social justice organization led by black trans people to advocate for the inequities released the following statement:
The anti-trans rhetoric in Texas has grown over the years, but in the past few weeks, it has attacked our transgender youth. Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have called gender-affirming surgery for trans youth – child abuse.
In a letter, Abbott called on professionals, teachers and doctors to report parents who are supporting their children with gender-affirming care. Neither Abbott nor Paxton have expertise in healthcare and have used their power to continue to spread disinformation and marginalize the communities in need.
For transgender children, this type of surgery will make them happy, not only physically, but it will also help with their mental health. The National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition stands with the parents and transgender youth that are under attack.
We urge Texans to continue their support for trans youth and the trans community. As a reminder, for those who have registered to vote, the Texas primaries are on March 1st. Visit your county’s elections website to find out where to vote.
