Conversion therapy is an economic burden and child abuse

March 16, 2022 – Dallas, TEXAS – The National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, the only social justice organization led by black trans people to advocate for the inequities of this community released the following statement:
Conservative ideologies can have a negative impact on many people’s lives, including the LGBTQ+ community.  One of those ideologies is the so-called conversion therapy, the practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The practice is considered by many to be dangerous and psychologically damaging. It has been linked to anxiety, depression, self-harm, substance abuse, and suicide.

A recent study by JAMA Pediatrics, showed that conversion therapy is also an economic burden to society, costing taxpayers more than $9 billon a year, almost $100,000 per person in the United States. Money that could be used to provide healthcare to people in need, reduce homelessness or any other need in our country.

It is imperative that politicians protect youth from this unacceptable practice and stop funding this unsafe method that can be damaging to vulnerable people. 25 states have laws on the books that ban conversion therapy for minors. This is an important step in the right direction. As more and more states enact laws banning conversion therapy, it will help reduce the risk of these harmful practices.

Rather than accusing loving families that want to support their transgender children transition to the gender they identify with, this conservative practice is that one that should be considered child abuse.

The Black Trans Advocacy Coalition stands with those who are fighting to protect the vulnerable.
